What is a Dental Implant?

Plain and simple – Nobody want to lose teeth but it happens everyday to you or someone you know.

Before dental implants, you would see your dentist and he would pretty much offer you three options:

  • Do nothing (which means smiling/eating with missing teeth)
  • Wear a retainer with denture teeth (basically a piece of plastic to fill in the gap)
  • Make a dental bridge (still a good option but you have to grind on your remaining teeth to fit the bridge)

If you are currently wearing dentures or think you might need dentures

A dental implant is really a very simple metal screw which is designed to thread into the bone of the jaw and to allow for the attachment of a (crown) tooth at the top. Implants are made of pure Titanium or Titanium Alloy.

Simply, they replace or act as the root of tooth. A single implant can replace one missing tooth or 4-8 implants can be used to replace an entire arch of the jaw. You do not need an implant per tooth to replace an entire set of teeth.

It’s simple engineering and anchoring all the teeth by spreading out 4-8 implants. Your dentist will purchase the implants in sterile packaging and place them in a small hole in the bone which he or she has prepared as part of the implant placement procedure.

The bone will bond and “stick” to the implant over a short period of time in a process referred to as ‘osseointegration’ and once this process is successfully completed (3 to 4 months) the implant is permanently in place. At this point your dentist can use the implants to finalize your teeth and smile.
